American Quarter Horse

One of the most popular horse breeds in America is the American Quarter Horse. This breed is known for its versatility and athleticism, and has been used extensively in a variety of disciplines including racing, rodeo, and ranch work. Quarter Horses are also popular as pleasure horses and trail riding companions.

The American Quarter Horse gets its name from its speed over short distances, particularly a quarter mile (400 m). The breed was developed in the colonial United States from a cross between English Thoroughbreds and native stock, such as the Spanish Mustang. The Quarter Horse became widely used by ranchers in what was then the American West for cow-herding and other stock work tasks.

Today, there are two main types of Quarter Horses: those bred for racing, which tend to be more closely related to the Thoroughbred, and those bred for other uses such as rodeo or working cattle, which are more likely to have ancestry from SpanishMustangs or other primitive horse breeds. Regardless of type, all modern Quarter Horses share certain physical characteristics: they are compact with muscular bodies; short heads; wide chests; strong legs; and large hindquarters. They typically stand between 14 and 16 hands high (56-64 inches/142-163 cm) at the withers.
