This year’s edition did not disappoint, with exciting competition throughout all three days of competition.

In the Open Preliminary division, it was Hannah Sieber and her horse Patriot who took home first place honors. Sieber has been a regular competitor at Morven Park over the past few years, and her experience showed as she navigated her way around the course with ease. Second place went to Lauren Kieffer and Vermiculus, who put in a strong showing despite some tense moments early on in their round.

Rounding out the top three was Liza Horan and Land’s End Promise, who finished just behind Kieffer after a steady performance throughout. The Open Intermediate division saw another rider-horse combination take home top honors, as Caroline Martin and Remington XXV topped the field. Martin has been a fixture at Morven Park for many years now, and her familiarity with the course proved to be an asset as she rode to victory.

Third place went to Lynn Symansky and Donner after a tight battle with several other riders throughout Sunday’s final rounds of competition.

Morven Park Slaves

Morven Park, located in Leesburg, Virginia, was the former home of Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis and his wife, Marguerite. The property was originally part of a land grant from King George III to Lord Fairfax in 1747. In 1825, John Tayloe III purchased the property and built the house that still stands today.

Morven Park remained in the hands of the Tayloe family until 1943 when it was sold to Loudoun County. During the time that Morven Park was owned by the Tayloes, it was a working farm with slaves who lived on site. In fact, many of the outbuildings that exist on the property today were built by slave labor.

While we don’t have an exact count of how many slaves were living at Morven Park during this time period, historians believe that it could have been as many as 60. The lives of these slaves were likely very difficult. They would have been required to work long hours in all kinds of weather conditions with little rest or food.

They would also have been subject to physical and emotional abuse at the hands of their owners. Although we will never know all of the details about their lives, we do know that some slaves did manage to escape from Morven Park and others plantations in Loudoun County. One such slave was Henry “Box” Brown who famously escaped to freedom by shipping himself in a box from Richmond to Philadelphia in 1849.
